With 17 babies stillborn or dying shortly after birth every day in the UK, bereaved local mum Elisha O’Garro is one of a group of Enfield-based parents on a mission to provide support to fellow bereaved parents.
Working with Sands, the stillbirth and neonatal death charity, Elisha and fellow bereaved parent, Sofia Moualdi, have re-launched the Enfield Sands Group (previously Waltham Forest & Enfield Sands) and are inviting people who live locally, and who have been affected by the death of a baby, to come along to support meetings.
The group will hold its first support meeting on Friday 7th November from 5-7pm.
Meetings will then continue to be held on the first Friday of every month at Green Towers Community Centre, 7 Plevna Road, Edmonton Green, Edmonton, London N9 0BU.
The new Group hopes that parents and families from Enfield, Barnet, Haringey, Waltham Forest and Hackney will find great benefit from the new support, and they also have plans to fundraise in the near future.
Elisha O’Garro, Chair, Enfield Sands said:
“Following the loss of our babies, a fellow bereaved mum and I met at a Sands Befriender Training course and we both expressed interest in setting up a support group. We then met other bereaved parents in the area who were interested in doing the same and together we have set up Enfield Sands.
“With the closure of a maternity unit at one of our local hospitals, meaning that extra pressure is put on the remaining one, and with no previous support meetings in our area, we hope that it will fill a gap in much-needed support for local bereaved families.”
